I found it to be an interesting concept to watch the same event with an international audience while simultaneously leaving banter and commentary to one another in real-time over social media.
Nowadays, it’s commonplace to like, tweet, favorite, and share photos, video, and text online, but it still felt a bit surreal to simply enter in a few hashtags over Twitter to get a feel for the public’s mood. One of the many tweets I replied to was from a Salt Lake City Utah reporter who was live in London doing coverage and I’m reading his first hand accounts in Los Angeles! Talk about G.L.O.B.A.L.
There was quite a bit of commentary and one-liners flying by last night. Most were tame, some were humorous, and a few were absolutely inappropriate. Here are nine tweets that stood out to me:
Sarah Schultz @schultzse
I’d much rather watch the #OlympicCeremony on TV rather than live in London, because without the narration, I’d be bloody confused.
Welcome home, Hong Kong! #London2012
Emily Jolly @em_jolly
I didn’t even know half these countries existed #London2012
Hari Kondabolu @harikondabolu
For the Queen of England, seeing all the different nations at the opening ceremony is like being in a room with all your exes #olympics
The Olympics Update @UpdateOlympics
For the first time in Olympic history all participating teams will have female athletes #OpeningCeremony
Dead pan voice “If you’re looking for a riveting game of badminton, and let’s be honest who isn’t, tune into Bravo.” Lol. #OpeningCeremony
Emily Simonson @EmilyKatheryn1
And IRELAND! Watch out London, they have luck on their side! #OpeningCeremony
Christi Klein @cklegalblond
GB should be wearing #Burberry wouldn’t that be slick?! #Olympics #OpeningCeremony
Ralph Lauren’s Team USA uniforms were made in China, make our athletes look French, and we’re from the US…ugh!
What notable commentary or tweets did you spot during the festivities?
